l BLOG: Artificial intelligence l
In this blog the subject of artificial intelligence is discussed. What exactly is artificial intelligence? What are the benefits and risks of artificial intelligence?
What exactly is artificial intelligence (AI)?
AI are systems that respond to data or impulses from their environment and make decisions independently on the basis of that data or impulses. Machines, software and devices can solve problems and make decisions independently. They imitate the ability of thinking of the human being. The devices are not aware of the tasks they perform. They follow algorithms and recognize patterns. By learning from their own mistakes, they become smarter and deliver better results.
AI offers great opportunities and can make our lives a lot better and easier. It is not always possible to oversee everything for humans, while a computer can keep a better overview of processes. In addition, it does not suffer from human limitations such as emotions. The computer can help us to make connections and draw conclusions. Examples are: more accurate scans in healthcare, self-driving cars, traffic planning, face scans at airports, etc. The technology that recognises and learns from speech, images and patterns can make our lives easier and more efficient.
A major disadvantage is that if systems learn independently, it is no longer traceable and transparent how they came to a decision. In some cases you want to know how the computer came to a decision, but only human can argue a decision.
Another disadvantage is the purpose of AI. Nowadays algorithms on social media determine what message you get to see, hoping that you stay on the platform as long as possible and preferably click through on advertisements. The purpose of AI becomes (too) commercial.
In addition, there is a risk that you will be completely guided by AI and you can ask yourself who actually decides. For example, recommendations on Netflix or Spotify. Is there still a free will and do you make a conscious choice yourself? It is important to consider to what extent we want AI to be leading in our decisions.
Finally, a major risk is the loss of privacy. Everyone with a mobile phone is traceable and search engines know who you are. The question is to what extent we want AI to penetrate our privacy and offline lives.
Due the developments in AI, it is important that you protect your software and hardware against cyber attacks and become aware of the impact that the development of artificial intelligence has (such as the impact on privacy).
